Traveling to Kamogawa
We traveled from Tokyo to Kamogawa using public transport. While the journey is straightforward, it is a bit of a trek with a toddler. After enjoying an incredible Japanese breakfast, we began our exploration at Oyama Senmaida. These are iconic traditional rice fields set against a stunning mountain backdrop. Since public transport to the terraces can be difficult to navigate with a young child, we opted for a taxi.
Our taxi driver was a highlight of the trip. He provided fascinating details about the history of the rice fields and even offered to capture photos for our family. The view of the tiered paddies is serene and provides a true sense of “old Japan.”
2. Discovering the History of Oyama Temple
Our helpful driver then suggested a visit to the nearby Oyama Temple. This historic site holds immense spiritual value for local residents. The architecture is beautiful and preserved with care. Under the guidance of our driver, we participated in the striking of the temple bell, an experience that our daughter found fascinating.
3. Family Fun at Kamogawa Sea World
Our final stop was the famous Kamogawa Sea World, located right on the edge of the Pacific Ocean. Tickets were approximately ¥3,300, and we spent about three hours exploring the facility. Get your tickets here.
We specifically chose this location because of the rare opportunity to see Orcas (Killer Whales) and Beluga Whales. We had never seen performances like these before, and they did not disappoint. The Dolphin show was equally entertaining, and the backdrop of the crashing Pacific Ocean waves added a dramatic beauty to the entire experience. Before leaving, we made sure to stop by the gift shop for souvenirs to remember our day.
