In May 2023, we embarked on a 14-day adventure, and our journey from Tokyo to Kawaguchiko was a major highlight. Even when the “Shy Mountain” hides behind the clouds, the region offers incredible culture, delicious Halal food, and breathtaking landscapes.

Arriving in Tokyo

Getting Started: The Mt. Fuji Pass
For our travels in the Fuji Five Lakes region, we purchased a 2-day Mt. Fuji Pass for ¥10,200 per person. This pass granted us unlimited access to public transport, including buses and trains in the area. If you want affordable and stress-free travel, this pass is a must-have for your budget.
Day 1: Arrival and Cultural Exploration
On the fourth day of our Japan tour, we woke up early and boarded a bus to Fujikawaguchiko. We booked our tickets online for ¥2000 through a reliable service. The journey took approximately 90 minutes, and we arrived around 11:00 AM in a very comfortable coach.
Fujikawaguchiko Masjid
Our first stop was the beautiful Fujikawaguchiko Masjid. We had heard glowing reviews about their Halal Café and stopped there for lunch. The wraps were delicious and fresh. The mosque itself is spacious and welcoming, featuring dedicated ablution (wudu) sections for both men and women. It is a perfect spiritual and culinary pitstop.
Yamanakako Hananomiyako Park
Next, we used our pass to reach Yamanakako Hananomiyako Park. The entrance fee was ¥600. While this park is famous for flower fields with Mt. Fuji in the background, we visited at the tail end of spring. The fields were between seasons, and the clouds blocked the mountain view. However, the park was still incredibly scenic with stunning waterfalls and vibrant Wisteria gardens. It is a peaceful spot regardless of the weather.
Yamanashi Prefectural Fujisan World Heritage Center
Before dinner, we visited this interactive center. Entry is free, and we spent about 40 minutes learning about the geological history of the mountain. The exhibits are engaging and offer digital views of Fuji for those “cloudy” days like ours. We even found a beautiful purple Kimono for our daughter at the museum gift shop.
The Ryokan Experience
We concluded our day with a walk along the scenic shores of Lake Kawaguchiko before checking into our Ryokan. Staying in a traditional Japanese inn is an essential experience. Between the tatami mats and the authentic breakfast, it offered a deep dive into Japanese culture.
Day 2: Iconic Views and Moving On
Arakurayama Sengen Park
We started our second day at Arakurayama Sengen Park. There is no entrance fee to reach the famous Chureito Pagoda. Since we had a stroller, we took the paved incline path. Pro tip: If you are able-bodied, the 400 stairs are likely much faster! Although the clouds once again hid the peak of Mt. Fuji, the pagoda and the surrounding forest were breathtaking.

Before leaving, we enjoyed a meal at Alladin Indo Restaurant, a certified Halal spot in Fujikawaguchiko. We ordered Samosas, Tandoori Mix, Naan, Butter Chicken, and Mutton Curry. The food was authentic, the spices were perfect, and the prices were very reasonable. Between this and the Masjid café, Halal travelers will feel right at home here.
Travel to Osaka
To continue our journey, we took a bus back to Tokyo. Currently, there is no direct Shinkansen from Kawaguchiko to Osaka. Once we arrived back at Tokyo Station, we boarded the Hikari Bullet Train to Osaka, arriving just in time for a late dinner.
Final Remarks
We had an absolute blast in Fujikawaguchiko. Even though Mt. Fuji remained elusive behind the clouds, the scenic beauty and the warmth of the Ryokan stay made it unforgettable. We will definitely return to Japan one day just to catch that perfect glimpse of the mountain!
