Day 1: European Vibes and Family Fun
Qanat Quartier
After a massive hotel breakfast, we began our journey at Qanat Quartier. The weather was perfect for walking. This neighborhood is designed to mimic Venice, featuring picturesque canals and bridges, but with a unique Middle Eastern twist of desert palm trees. While the area is filled with charming cafes and boutiques, we chose to skip the shops in favor of a long, peaceful walk to soak in the atmosphere.
Katara Cultural Village
From Qanat Quartier, we took a 25-minute stroll to Katara. This cultural hub is a masterpiece of architectural diversity. We spent three hours wandering through the Katara Mosque, the gleaming Gold Mosque, and the massive Amphitheatre. We even caught views of Katara Beach from a distance. For lunch, we stopped at a local spot for authentic Shawarma and Kunefa, which were highlights of our culinary experience.
Jungaloona at Lagoona Mall
To wrap up the day, we headed to Lagoona Mall. While we aren’t usually mall-goers, we discovered Jungaloona, an indoor play area. Since our daughter had been in her stroller for most of the morning, this was the perfect reward for her. She spent 40 minutes diving into ball pits and racing toy cars. Afterward, we headed back to our hotel and used the Talabat app to have dinner delivered directly to our room.
Day 2: Tradition, Culture, and the Gulf
Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque
Our second day fell on a Friday, so we headed to the State Mosque of Qatar for Jummah Prayer. The scale of the building is breathtaking and the architecture is captivating. The interior is just as stunning as the exterior, featuring a dedicated and spacious section for women.
Al-Koot Fort and the National Archives
On our way toward the traditional markets, we stumbled upon Al-Koot Fort. This old military fortress provides a striking visual contrast, with its traditional architecture standing firm against the backdrop of Doha’s modern skyline. Nearby, we also admired the sleek architecture of the National Archives of Qatar.
Souq Waqif
No Doha stopover guide is complete without Souq Waqif. This is the heart of Qatari culture. If you want to shop for traditional garments, spices, or intricate souvenirs, this is your destination. We spent two hours navigating the alleys and enjoying a delicious lunch. It is an absolute must-visit for anyone wanting an authentic taste of the city.
The Corniche and Dhow Boat Ride
We ended our afternoon at the Corniche, a waterfront promenade offering spectacular views of the West Bay skyscrapers. We walked for two hours, passing the Pearl Monument and the official FIFA World Cup 2022 Statue.
The highlight for our daughter was the 40-minute traditional boat ride on the Persian Gulf. Seeing the landmarks of Doha from the water was magical. After the ride, we caught a taxi back to our hotel for one last night of relaxation.
Day 3 (Half Day): Exploring Hamad International Airport
Since our flight was on the third day, we arrived at Hamad International Airport early. The airport itself is a major attraction. We took the time to explore the indoor gardens and special installations offered for guests. We even picked up some last-minute FIFA merchandise to take home before our departure.
Final Remarks
Our short stay in Doha was a resounding success. The blend of ultra-modern infrastructure and deep-rooted culture made it a hit for the whole family. We particularly loved the food; being a Muslim-friendly destination, we enjoyed everything from traditional Qatari Shawarmas to the high-end Thai and Japanese cuisine ordered at our hotel.
