Planning Your Bangkok to Ayutthaya Day Trip
On the fourth day of our vacation, we headed to Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that served as the capital of the Kingdom of Siam. To make the most of our time, we booked a private taxi service for 8 hours. This provided us with a seamless pick up and drop off service from our hotel in Bangkok and allowed us to move between the scattered temple ruins at our own pace.
Exploring the Magnificent Temple Ruins
Ayutthaya is filled with massive ruins that tell the story of Thailand’s rich history. We spent approximately one hour at each of our four chosen locations. The total entrance cost for these four temples was 150 THB per person.

Wat Chaiwatthanaram
This was one of the most striking sites we visited. Its grand towers and riverside location make it a perfect spot for photography. The architecture is incredibly well preserved. We stopped at the nearby cafe for some cold drinks and ice-cream.
Wat Lokaya Sutha
This site is famous for its enormous reclining Buddha statue. It is an open air site that gives you a real sense of the scale of ancient Thai religious art.
Wat Phra Si Sanphet
Once the holiest temple in the Royal Palace, this site features three iconic large stupas. Walking through these ruins feels like stepping back in time to the height of the Ayutthaya Kingdom.
Wat Maha That
No trip to Ayutthaya is complete without seeing the famous Buddha head entwined in tree roots. This temple is a major tourist location and often has big crowds, but the intricate brickwork and history make it worth the visit.
