Our journey began at the Archaeological Site of Mycenae. This fortified city was the center of the Mycenaean civilization and is now a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We entered through the iconic Lion Gate, the main entrance of the Bronze Age citadel. The ruins are well-labeled, making it easy to imagine the historical significance of the area. While we were in awe of the massive stone walls and scenic landscapes, our daughter found a different highlight: the many friendly stray cats that call these ancient ruins home.

History at the Sanctuary of Asklepios
After a 40 minute drive from Mycenae, we arrived at the Sanctuary of Asklepios in Epidaurus. In ancient times, this was the premier healing center of the Greek world where people sought divine cures.
The highlight here is undoubtedly the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. Its symmetry and acoustics are world-famous. However, our visit took a dramatic turn. Just as we finished, a gentle rain turned into a violent hailstorm. With aggressive winds shaking the trees in the parking lot and visibility dropping to near zero, we had to navigate our way out of the isolated site behind a line of other cautious tourists. It was a harrowing drive that we will never forget.

Coastal Beauty in Nafplion
By the time we reached Nafplion, the storm had settled into a gentle shower. This coastal city is frequently cited as one of the most beautiful in Greece, and it did not disappoint.
Because of the weather, we opted for a scenic drive through the city streets and up to the Palamidi Fortress. The views of the Argolic Gulf were stunning even through the rain. We enjoyed a delicious meal at a local restaurant before making the drive back to Athens.

The drive through the Peloponnese is incredibly scenic and the archaeological sites are deeply impressive. While the storm at Epidaurus was a bit frightening, it added a layer of adventure to our story.
