The Ultimate 2-Day Melaka Itinerary: 14 Proven Historical Gems You Will Love

Visit To The Capital of Malayu Kingdom

In December 2025, our family went on an incredible multi-country vacation where we visited Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore in one go. Because of how we structured our journey, we would come and go out of Malaysia to visit the other countries.

During this amazing trip, we spent two wonderful days in Melaka. I have always been deeply fascinated by the rich history this city holds, so I knew I absolutely had to add it to our travel list.

After spending our first two days in Kuala Lumpur, we flew to Bangkok and spent a week enjoying the beauty of Thailand. On our return to Kuala Lumpur, we travelled straight to Melaka to spend two days exploring. We instantly fell in love with the unique vibe of this historical city.

Planning Your Malaysian Trip

Day 1: Architectural Wonders and Cultural Discoveries in Melaka

Masjid Selat Melaka (The Melaka Straits Mosque)

We started our first full day with a visit to the magnificent Masjid Selat Melaka. The mosque features extremely beautiful and sophisticated architecture. What makes it even more appealing is its stunning location right on the seashore, giving it the appearance of a floating mosque. We spent an hour at the mosque and found ourselves continuously mesmerized by the scenic beauty of the area.

Bukit Cina

Next, we used the GRAB app to arrive at Bukit Cina, our next checkpoint. If you are hoping to read about and understand the Chinese history of Melaka, Bukit Cina is the absolute best place to visit.

We spent an hour exploring Bukit Cina because of an Urdu novel titled Haalim that I had read. I was determined to visit all the real-world locations mentioned in the novel, which inspired this specific trip to Bukit Cina. During our walk, we visited the Sultan’s Well, Perigi Hang Li Poh, Poh San Teng Temple, and the Melaka Warrior Monument. We learnt a lot about the incredible contributions of the Chinese community in both historic and present-day Melaka.

Gurdwara Sahib Melaka

On our walk towards the Stadthuys, we came across the Gurdwara Sahib Melaka and decided to step inside. Our family had never been inside a Gurdwara before. Upon entering, we were warmly greeted by some local Sikhs who kindly briefed us on the correct etiquette required to enter the temple. We spent only a few minutes at the Gurdwara because it was not a traditional tourist location, and we wanted to ensure we did not disturb the worshippers.

Stadthuys and Red Square

The historic Stadthuys is located right in the heart of Melaka and stands as a massive testament to the historic presence of the Dutch in the city. The entrance ticket was 20 Malaysian Ringgit.

We spent an hour exploring the inside of the Stadthuys, where we read about the colonial history of Melaka and how the region operated both before and after colonization by the Dutch and other nations. In addition to the main Stadthuys building, we explored the other famous locations inside Red Square (also known as Dutch Square), including Queen Victoria’s Fountain, the Tan Beng Swee Clock, and the Melaka Windmill.

Church of St. Francis Xavier Melaka

The Church of St. Francis Xavier Melaka was our next checkpoint. This is the largest church in Melaka and was built directly on the site of an old Portuguese church. The structure features a beautiful, bright white colour and a somewhat modern architectural style compared to older ruins nearby.

Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall

We ended our first day of exploration at the Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall. This is a sizable mall that offers a wide variety of food and shopping options. We were highly interested in buying some authentic souvenirs of Malaysia, and this mall did not disappoint. I ended up further expanding my personal Hijab collection by buying loads of beautiful Hijabs at the mall, while the kids indulged in some fun toy shopping. We spent almost two hours enjoying the mall before finally calling it a day.

Day 2: Ancient Ruins, River Cruises, and Street Art

Kampung Kling Mosque

Our second day in Melaka started with a visit to another gorgeous place of worship. The Kampung Kling Mosque is a beautiful mosque located very close to Jonker Street. It features a stunning ablution area with a fountain situated in the main courtyard, which made it look extremely unique to us. This was the first time we had ever seen an ablution area designed in this specific sort of way, and we have visited a lot of mosques in many different countries.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

The Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is located on the exact same street as the Kampung Kling Mosque. This elegant Chinese temple is famous for being the oldest functioning temple in Malaysia. The preservation of the building is remarkable.

Jonker Street

Our next major checkpoint was the famous Jonker Street. We walked around the lively street, going inside different shops and buying lovely souvenirs to take home. Jonker Street had an awesome overall vibe, and we heard from locals that it becomes even better and more vibrant in the evening. During our walk, we also went around the Melaka Street 3D Art area and the Jonker Street Walk, where we thoroughly enjoyed looking at the colourful murals and the famous street art.

Melaka River Cruise

Pro-tip: We had to wait in a long queue. Secure your ticket using the widget below to skip the line.

After exploring Jonker Street, we decided to hop on the hour long Melaka River Cruise. The round tour was worth 35 Malaysian Ringgit, and the entire experience was extremely scenic. As we floated along, the guide shared amazing historical facts about the different landmarks in Melaka. Our whole family enjoyed the River Cruise a lot.

Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum

The Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum was our next major checkpoint, where we spent a full hour. The entrance ticket cost 10 MYR. Inside, we learnt a lot about the fascinating early history of Melaka and read many stories about different famous historical figures from the area. The surrounding gardens of the palace were absolutely stunning, and the wooden palace itself featured a beautiful design. It was completely different from any of the other palaces we had visited in the past.

A Famosa Portuguese Ruins

Just outside the palace museum, one can easily spot the famous A Famosa Portuguese Ruins. These are the surviving ruins of a massive fort built by the Portuguese in the early 16th Century. The stone ruins stand as a powerful testament to the historic presence of early colonizers in Melaka.

St. Paul’s Hill and Church

Another major colonial landmark you cannot miss is St. Paul’s Hill, which is located extremely close to the A Famosa Portuguese Ruins. Walking up the hill provides scenic, panoramic views of present day Melaka, while the historic ruins of the church at the summit leave a lasting colonial mark.

Mahkota Parade

After a busy day of historical exploration around Melaka, we found ourselves at our chosen mall of the day. Mahkota Parade is located right in front of the Dataran Pahlawan Melaka Megamall. Because we had gotten extremely tired and dehydrated by spending the whole day outdoors in the hot sun, we took much needed refuge inside Mahkota Parade.

We walked around the air-conditioned mall filling our bags with final souvenirs and enjoying nice cold drinks. The mall has fantastic shopping and food options, and we took full advantage of both to recover our energy.

Ratio Fusion Beef Cuisine is a fantastic Halal Japanese restaurant located in Melaka. We ordered the Beef Pho, Fish and Chips, and the Basil Minced Beef Rice. The food was extremely delicious. A 100% Halal Nando’s is located conveniently inside the Mahkota Parade Melaka mall. Because we had spent the entire day exploring the city and wanted a quick, reliable dinner, we stopped here. I will be honest, I had never tried Nando’s before this day.

I was extremely hungry and ended up ordering too many things, including the Butter Corn, French Fries, Coleslaw, and multiple types of delicious Chicken and Rice. The food was extremely delicious. In fact, Mehran kept on asking me if I wanted to eat at Nando’s every single time we saw one later in the trip because I became so obsessed with the good taste.

The Daily Fix Café

We had an incredible breakfast at The Daily Fix Café in Melaka. Our hotel had the most terrible breakfast buffet, so we went out looking for some good quality breakfast food instead. We had to wait in line for half an hour before we were finally seated, but it was worth it.

The Daily Fix Café is extremely popular amongst tourists, and rightly so. We ordered the Chicken Club Sandwich, Banana Pancakes, French Toast, Coffee, and Hot Chocolate Milk. Every single item was extremely delicious, and we all loved it.

Final Remarks

We had a great time at Melaka. Learning the history of what was once the capital of the Malayu Kingdom really helped us understand the country Malaysia is today. We loved the history and the food was also great. We recommend Melaka to people looking for peace and quiet from the traffic of Kuala Lumpur.
