A Layover Worth Remembering

If you are planning a short trip to the United Arab Emirates, this 4-day Dubai itinerary is the ultimate guide for families. In January 2025, we embarked on a 4-day exploration of Dubai during a layover. Even though our two children were feeling under the weather, we managed to experience the city’s most iconic landmarks and hidden gems. From the digital wonders of ARTE Museum to the cultural feast of Global Village, here is how we made the most of our time while keeping things relaxed and kid friendly.

Day 1: Culture and Illusions in Al Seef

Museum of Illusions Dubai

We kicked off our first afternoon at the Museum of Illusions Dubai. For 95 AED per person, we spent 90 minutes exploring mind-boggling exhibits. The staff was incredibly helpful, guiding us through each illusion and even taking photos of us on our personal devices. It was a perfect mood booster for our daughter, who was so captivated she didn’t want to leave.

Al Seef Dubai

Since the museum is located within Al Seef, we spent the next two hours wandering through this beautiful waterfront promenade. Al Seef perfectly showcases the heritage of Dubai through its rich architecture. We enjoyed snacks like charred corn and ice cream while browsing souvenir shops for cultural keepsakes. The view of Dubai Creek is stunning, especially at night when the lights reflect off the water.

Day 2: Icons of Downtown Dubai

ARTE Museum

Our second day was dedicated to the world-famous Dubai Mall area. We started at the ARTE Museum inside the mall. While we aren’t typically “art gallery people,” the 119 AED ticket was worth every fils. This digital art exhibition was therapeutic and inspiring. We especially loved the interactive station where you color drawings and scan them to see them come to life on massive screens. It was an 11/10 experience for relaxation.

Play DXB

To let the kids burn off some energy, we headed to Play DXB, a massive indoor arcade. After topping up a play card, our daughter had a blast on the various rides and games. We spent an hour here, though our daughter definitely would have stayed longer if lunch hadn’t been calling.

Dubai Mall and The Burj Khalifa

After a quick lunch, we explored the vast expanse of Dubai Mall. At 5:45 PM, we stepped outside to witness the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world. We secured a spot for the 6:00 PM Dubai Fountain show. Watching the dancing water against the backdrop of the illuminated skyscraper was a magical moment for the whole family.

Day 3: A World Tour at Global Village

The third day was the highlight of our trip: Global Village Dubai. With an entry fee of only 25 AED, this is perhaps the best value in the city. We arrived at 4:00 PM and stayed until 9:30 PM. The kids loved the attractions and had a blast going through the toddler-friendly rides.

The evening was a mix of thrill rides and a global culinary tour. We visited the Pakistani Pavilion for a nostalgic feast of Samosa plates, Gol Gappay, Matka Chai, and Falooda. We also picked up a beautiful personalized family tree souvenir here.

Other culinary highlights included:

• Thailand Pavilion: Authentic Mango Sticky Rice.
• Spanish Pavilion: Fresh, crispy Churros.
• Japanese Pavilion: Savory noodles from Noodleverse and fluffy Japanese Cheesecake.

Mehran enjoyed this so much that he claimed he would do a Dubai layover just to visit Global Village again.

Day 4: Sensory Wonders and Wafi City

AYA Universe

On our final day, we visited AYA Universe in Wafi City. The 130 AED ticket grants access to 12 themed rooms that use light and sound to create a celestial experience. Our favorite rooms were “Flora” and “The Falls.” It is a high-energy sensory experience that definitely lives up to the social media hype.

Wafi City Mall and Stay & Play

We spent the afternoon at Wafi City Mall. While we found the mall itself a bit quiet for our tastes, we discovered “Stay & Play.” We purchased a 1-hour pass for 125 AED so our daughter could enjoy the attractions. I even joined her in the ball pit for a bit of fun. It was the perfect way to wrap up the trip before heading to the airport for our midnight flight.

Best Restaurants in Dubai

The Grill Shack (Dubai Mall)

If you are looking for a juicy burger while shopping, this is the spot. The food takes a little time to arrive, but the quality of the steaks and burgers is “finger-licking” good.

Mogi-ya (Yakiniku)

This was our absolute favorite dining experience. It is an authentic Japanese restaurant where we enjoyed an A5 Wagyu beef grill platter. The decor, filled with anime figures and swords, made us feel like we were back in Japan.

Ichiryu Ramen House

While the anime-themed atmosphere was great and the sushi and takoyaki were top-tier, the ramen was a bit of a letdown for us. It was quite heavy and fatty, which might not suit everyone’s palate if you prefer a traditional broth.

Final Remarks

Our trip to Dubai, UAE with two little and ill kids was somewhat challenging for the whole family. It wasn’t easy navigating the activities while taking care of the kids’ routines and health. Nevertheless, this was our first major vacation outside Europe as a family of four and we had a really good time. The main highlights for us were ARTE Museum, Global Village Dubai and the dining experience at Mogi-ya.
