A Trip Dedicated to Pandas

Vienna is a city where history breathes through every cobblestone and Gothic spire. In 2017, I realized a childhood dream by traveling to this Austrian gem. 1. Visit Tiergarten Schönbrunn: The World’s Oldest Zoo

Our morning began at Tiergarten Schönbrunn. This isn’t just any zoo. It is the oldest in the world and houses approximately 600 species. The entry ticket is 27 Euros for adults and 15.50 Euros for kids. We spent about 4 hours inside. Finding the pandas was my top priority, and we found them quickly “chilling in the trees.” Next door, we found the koalas, which were also hugging branches and napping. 2. Stroll the Schönbrunn Palace Gardens

3. Step Inside Stephansdom (St. Stephen’s Cathedral)

After lunch, we headed to this Roman Catholic church. The Gothic architecture is breathtaking. We spent 20 minutes inside, and the interior is just as intricate as the exterior. It is a mandatory stop for any history or architecture enthusiast.

4. Reflect at the Column of Pest

A short 4 minute walk from the cathedral brings you to the Column of Pest. This monument was erected as a memorial to the Great Plague epidemic of 1679. It stands as a powerful piece of Baroque sculpture in the heart of the city.

5. Admire the Hofburg Palace and Heldenplatz

Next, we visited the Hofburg Palace, the former imperial seat of the Habsburg dynasty. The architecture is mesmerizing and a magnet for tourists. Nearby is Heldenplatz, a public square with deep historical roots ranging from the Habsburg era to World War II.

6. View the Austrian Parliament and Natural History Museum

Our walk continued past the Museum of Natural History to the Austrian Parliament Building. We even witnessed a local protest happening outside, which we observed from a distance to soak in the local atmosphere.

7. See the Burgtheater and Wiener Rathaus

We finished our tour by admiring the Burgtheater and the Wiener Rathaus (Vienna City Hall). These buildings offer some of the most stunning examples of Vienna’s grand design. After finishing our walk, we had dinner and headed back to the hotel.
