1 Unforgettable Night Sledging at Preda-Bergün: The Honest Truth

An Adventurous Night Sledging Experience

It was back in 2019 when I was scrolling through my Facebook feed and came across a giveaway competition for an all inclusive night sledging experience at Preda-Bergün. The experience started at Chur and the railway ticket to Preda-Bergün was also covered by the giveaway. I aimlessly filled in the form, thinking to myself, “How am I ever going to win this?”

To my surprise, a few days later I got an email confirming that I had won the contest. And this is the story of how we experienced free night sledging at Preda-Bergün.

Getting Around and Staying in Switzerland

Riding the UNESCO World Heritage Route to Preda

We drove from Zürich to Chur. After parking our car, we took the RhB Albula Line to Preda-Bergün. The train ride covered a UNESCO World Heritage route and was extremely scenic.

The First Run: Speed and Scenic Winter Views

Once we reached Preda-Bergün, we rented our sledging equipment and headed straight to the sledge run. The track is almost 6 kilometers long and offers incredible views. The darkness made the winter scene even more breathtaking.

Our first attempt at sledging was highly enjoyable and pretty smooth. The track felt extremely safe, and we were comfortable with the pace of the sledge.

Chaos on the Track: The Second Run

The real drama began when we started our second run of the night. There were a few people sledging who were bumping into their friends on purpose. As a result, they were involuntarily bumping into strangers and toppling them over. It was perhaps funny to them, but it was extremely dangerous for everyone else on the track. A family got caught in their lunacy, and two children got hurt due to the bumping. Because of this, there was a lot of crying and screaming. What was supposed to be a fun experience turned very sour very quickly.

Leaving the Sledge Run Behind

As we could see that the troublemakers were not stopping, we quit sledging after our second go. We decided to walk around the town to get some fresh air instead. We tried looking for a place to eat, but all the restaurants had very long waiting times.

Consequently, we hopped on our train back to Chur and had some food there before finally returning to Zürich.

Final Remarks

Our free night sledging experience at Preda-Bergün was enjoyable and extremely scenic, but I would not recommend night sledging to families with young kids.
