Day 1: Iconic Landmarks and Royal Architecture
Berliner Zoological Garden
We began our journey at the Berliner Zoological Garden. Since our daughter is a huge animal lover, this was a must. The entrance, known as the Elephant Gate, is an architectural masterpiece that feels like stepping into an Asian temple. We paid 18.30 Euros per ticket and spent about 2.5 hours exploring. While the zoo is too vast to see entirely in one morning, we loved seeing the Pandas, Leopards, Lions, and Elephants.
Checkpoint Charlie
Next, we headed to Checkpoint Charlie, the most famous crossing point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. It stands today as a powerful memorial site. We took a moment to reflect on the history there before finding a local spot for lunch.
Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe
After lunch, we visited this somber site. The memorial consists of 2,711 concrete slabs of varying heights, designed to signify the tragic loss of life during the Holocaust. It is a quiet, reflective space that is essential for understanding the city’s past.
Brandenburg Gate
A short walk away is the Brandenburg Gate. As a symbol of German peace and unity, its stunning neoclassical architecture attracts visitors from all over the world. It is the perfect spot for photography and historical context.
Reichstag
We then moved on to the Reichstag, the seat of the German Parliament. While indoor tours were closed due to restrictions during our visit, the exterior is still incredibly impressive. Usually, you can walk through its famous glass dome for a panoramic view of the city.

We started day two with a 90 minute visit to the Topography of Terror. Located on the former site of the Gestapo headquarters, this museum provides a chilling look at Nazi crimes through photographs and written evidence. It is a heavy but necessary experience.
Soviet War Memorial (Treptow Park)
Next, we visited Treptow Park to see the Soviet War Memorial. The autumn leaves made our walk through the park feel therapeutic. The monument features a massive statue of a Soviet soldier and serves as the final resting place for 7,000 soldiers who died during the liberation of Berlin.
East Side Gallery
For a change of pace, we visited the East Side Gallery. This is the longest surviving section of the Berlin Wall and is covered in vibrant graffiti art. It serves as a beautiful tribute to freedom and creative expression.
Berlin Wall Memorial
Our final stop was the Berlin Wall Memorial. This site is dedicated to mourning those who lost their lives attempting to cross the wall. It was a brief but poignant end to our weekend of exploration.
